IP stands for Internet Protocol. When I was in computer classes, after a few days of hearing the word protocol over and over, I decided it was another word for “language”. IP is the language computers use over the Internet. An IP address usually looks like this 192.168.2.2 four sets of numbers separated by dots. Those numbers mean a lot to computers who talk in IP.
All domain names translate into IP addresses. So, instead of having to remember 188.8.131.52, we can type WeBuyUglyHouses.com into the web browser and, thanks to a speedy series of translations, we arrive at a website.
It’s exactly the same as people giving out their phone numbers as 800-WAIT-WAIT. Instead of giving the very unmemorable numbers.
